I really love what you guys have done with kendo so far and I am looking forward to future developments in this area. The one question I have is regarding your decision to support jquery, but not use the 'native' jquery-ui theme roller. We (and I'm sure many other people) have several projects that currently depend on the jquery themeroller. It sure would be nice if your widgets just picked up those standard css styles wherever possible. What benefit did you foresee developers gaining by going with your own custom theming solution? Do you guys have any plans to support jquery-ui themes? This is a challenging issue for those projects where we allow the end user to select their own theme, and has become a show stopper where we allow customers to roll their own theme for our application.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this matter or am I just missing a better way to solve these issues.

Kendo UI is indeed using jQuery but is not based on jQuery UI because we see the latter as a competing product. This is the reason we don't have plans to implement such support. In the future (if there is interest) we can add support in our ThemeBuilder to import jQuery UI themes and convert them to Kendo UI themes.

Thanks for the info. A tool that could convert themes would be extremely useful. Even if there were some sort of 'mapping' published so we could create our own would be fantastic.

I'm a long time user of jQuery UI, I love using it and it as been central to many of the interfaces(Adminica:http://themeforest.net/item/adminica-the-professional-admin-template/160638) I've created over the years. However I would argue it's greatest weakness is its themeroller system. In my opinion, it makes the various components look clunky and old fashioned.
Check out the date picker on the default skin: http://jqueryui.com/themeroller/ the left right arrows have the weirdest hover state.
The widgets in general waste so much space, take the tabs for example... they have their own container with padding. This tab container is also padded in from its containing element. This is such a waste of space and so ugly. In comparison the minimalism of the KendoUI looks(and works) so much better.
The best solution I've found when using themeroller is to use the bespoke Aristo themeroller skin (http://taitems.tumblr.com/post/482577430/introducing-aristo-a-jquery-ui-theme).
Note: This wasn't created using the themeroller tool.
I know it is a real timesaver when you drop in a new plugin and it automatically has the same look as the rest of the interface. However, what you gain intime, you lose in quality. The plugin stylings are always rough approximations that are often pretty messy and I will always have to edit the plugin stylesheet to get the styling absolutely perfect. I know every project won't have the time/budget to have a bespoke interface and as an interface designer this stuff is probably more important to me than say a developer.
So basically, the reason I have decided to use Kendo UI for an upcoming project is that it has a unified minimalist style and a solid theme structure which is more advanced/sensible than themeroller.

After using kendo for a couple of months, I totally agree with you Oisin. In hindsight, I would actually love some sort of tool that would apply the kendo ui to existing jquery theme rolled projects. This would be of great help for those projects which were built originally using jquery widgets but have matured and would benefit from the full framework of kendo. If you have any sensible approaches you are willing to suggest for this, I would be all ears.
