This behavior is expected. The Grid and the Filter components are bound to the same dataSource and if the Filter is not bound to the same dataSource restoring the Filter settings will not reflect the Grid.
Could you please share what you are trying to achieve so I can advice further?
I would say it would be great to have the filter working in expression builder mode, because what I need is just to build an expression & then apply it manually when I need it

The Filter component works well integrated with the Grid or other Kendo UI components. You can examine it live here:
In case you need something different could you please share more information? A video recording or screenshots could also be helpful. Once I am able to determine the scenario I can advice further.
